Bangladesh Academy of
Rural Development (BARD). In 1959, the institute was established by Dr. Akhter
Hamid Khan in Comilla, he became the founder-director of the organization. The
academy is located in Kotbari, 10 kilometers away from Comilla town.
The institution is an
autonomous institution under the Local Government, Rural Development and
Co-operative Ministry, Rural Development and Co-operative Department. BARD is
managed by a 21-member board of directors, which is headed by the Honorable
Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operative Affairs
Ministry. The Director General is the Chief Executive of the Academy, who is
assisted by an Additional Director General and nine Directors. All the
activities of the academy are managed by nine departments, each headed by a
director. For the 'Comilla Model' of rural development, developed by the
academy, BARD earned renown in country and abroad.
The
company is spread across a vast area. There are accommodation, conference
rooms, mosques, libraries, a health clinic, primary school, sports complexes,
and other amenities. One of BARD’s main programs is to provide training to
officers and members of government and non-government organizations working in
rural development activities.
